Phil Robertson, best known as the bearded patriarch of the hit reality TV show Duck Dynasty and a former quarterback at Louisiana Tech University, has died at the age of 79. His family announced the sad news on Sunday, although no specific cause of death was revealed.
Robertson’s son, Jase, mentioned back in December 2024 on the family’s podcast that Phil had been in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease.
A Sporting Legacy Before the Fame
Before his rise to television fame, Phil Robertson made a name for himself on the football field.
Robertson played as the starting quarterback at Louisiana Tech University during the 1966 and 1967 seasons.
Remarkably, he started ahead of the legendary Terry Bradshaw, who later became a Pro Football Hall of Famer and led the Pittsburgh Steelers to four Super Bowl victories.
During his time as quarterback, Robertson completed 179 of 411 passes, gaining 2,237 yards and scoring 12 touchdowns.
Despite this, he threw 34 interceptions and chose not to continue playing in 1968 to focus on his true passions—hunting and fishing.
Louisiana Tech paid tribute to Robertson, posting on social media:
“We are saddened to learn of the passing of former LA Tech quarterback, Phil Robertson. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Robertson family during this time.”
A Different Kind of Hall of Fame
Though his football career ended early, Robertson’s love for the outdoors led him to a new path of success.
He was inducted into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame, not for his sports achievements, but for his outstanding contributions as an outdoorsman.
His family’s company, Duck Commander, became hugely successful, crafting duck calls and other hunting gear.
A TV Phenomenon: Duck Dynasty
Robertson became a household name thanks to the hit reality show Duck Dynasty, which aired from 2012 to 2017 on A&E.
The show followed the Robertson family and their thriving outdoor gear business in Louisiana.
Viewers were captivated by the family’s humour, Christian faith, and southern charm.
At its peak, Duck Dynasty drew millions of viewers and was one of the most popular reality shows on cable television.
Remembering Phil’s Faith and Legacy
The Robertson family shared a heartfelt message on social media:
“Thank you for the love and prayers of so many whose lives have been impacted by his life saved by grace, his bold faith, and his desire to tell everyone who would listen to the Good News of Jesus. We are grateful for his life on earth and will continue the legacy of love for God and love for others until we see him again.”
Phil Robertson leaves behind not only a legacy of sporting and business success but also a strong message of faith, love, and resilience that touched millions.
