The biggest reveal came at the end of the event, as a director’s chair turned to reveal Robert Downey Jr., not as Iron Man, but as the infamous Doctor Doom. Wearing a suit and tie, he shushed the camera, teasing his mysterious role in Avengers: Doomsday.
Behind-the-Scenes Decisions
Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige first approached Downey with the idea of returning as Doctor Doom, and Downey, in turn, convinced Joe and Anthony Russo to return as directors. The Russo Brothers, known for directing Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, agreed after screenwriter Stephen McFeely pitched them an intriguing storyline.
The filmmakers confirmed they use a unique method to track the vast number of characters, utilizing baseball-style cards with actors’ names, now equipped with magnets for easy organization on a board.
What’s Next for the MCU?
Marvel has officially set May 1, 2026, as the release date for Avengers: Doomsday, followed by its sequel Avengers: Secret Wars on May 7, 2027.
With an ensemble cast spanning multiple Marvel franchises, Avengers: Doomsday promises to be one of the most ambitious crossover events in cinema history. Fans can expect further casting announcements in the coming months, as Marvel continues to build anticipation for its next superhero epic.
