Giants ‘Devastated’ as Cam Skattebo Suffers Serious Ankle Injury During Loss to Eagles

Philadelphia, PA – The New York Giants are facing yet another major setback after rookie running back Cam Skattebo suffered a severe right ankle injury during Sunday’s 38–20 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. The 23-year-old remains hospitalised in Philadelphia after undergoing emergency surgery to repair an open dislocation of his right ankle, according to ESPN sources.

A Gruesome Moment on the Field

The horrifying injury occurred midway through the second quarter when Skattebo attempted to catch a pass across the middle. His ankle became trapped beneath an Eagles defender, causing his right foot to twist sharply out of position.

As soon as it happened, players on both sides immediately recognised the seriousness of the injury. Some turned away, visibly shaken, while one Eagles player ran off the field in distress. Giants offensive lineman Greg Van Roten, who was nearest to Skattebo, quickly signalled for medical staff.

“I saw him on the ground with his leg trapped,” Van Roten explained. “When he pulled it out, you could see his foot was the wrong way. I just wanted him to stay down and let the trainers handle it. It’s hard to see something like that.”

Emotional Reactions From Teammates and Coach

Giants head coach Brian Daboll expressed his heartbreak after the game, calling it a “terrible situation for a young man with such promise.”

“You feel for anybody who goes down like that,” Daboll said. “It looked bad from where I was. Cam’s worked hard, and I know the players are hurting for him.”

Quarterback Jaxson Dart, a close friend of Skattebo’s and fellow rookie, was visibly emotional after the incident.

“Yeah, I was devastated,” Dart admitted. “That’s my boy. Seeing him go down like that—it sucks. It’s the worst part of this game.”

Even the Philadelphia crowd stood in solidarity, giving Skattebo a standing ovation as he was carted off the field with his leg secured in an air cast. The rookie managed a small wave to acknowledge the fans’ support.

A Promising Season Cut Short

Before the injury, Skattebo had already made his mark this season. Drafted in the fourth round out of Arizona State, he had quickly become the Giants’ feature back, energising the team’s struggling offence. Earlier in the same game, he scored his seventh touchdown of the season on an 18-yard reception from Dart—his second receiving TD in two weeks.

His rookie campaign now ends prematurely with:

  • 101 rushing attempts

  • 410 yards

  • 5 rushing touchdowns

  • 2 receiving touchdowns

Wide receiver Darius Slayton praised Skattebo’s impact both on and off the field:

“He’s an energetic, unifying guy. You hate to see something like this happen, especially when he was having such a great year.”

Giants Face Another Major Setback

The Giants are already battling injury troubles, with star wide receiver Malik Nabers sidelined due to a torn ACL earlier this month. Losing Skattebo adds another major blow to an already depleted offence.

In Skattebo’s absence, the Giants are expected to rely on Tyrone Tracy Jr. and Devin Singletary to handle backfield duties:

  • Tracy had 10 carries for 39 yards against the Eagles.

  • Singletary recorded two carries for no gain.

The team will now have to regroup quickly as they prepare for next week’s matchup without two of their most dynamic young playmakers.

The Road Ahead

Although the Giants have not yet released an official timeline, sources suggest Skattebo will miss the rest of the season. Recovery from such an injury typically requires several months of rehabilitation.

Despite the heartbreak, teammates and fans alike are sending well wishes to the young running back. His grit, energy, and performance this season have made him one of the most exciting rookies in New York’s lineup.
